Caste Island Park (Source: Robert Linsdell)
Since 1634, Castle Island has been home to eight different fortresses, and this 22-acre island in Boston’s Inner Harbor has played a prominent role in protecting the city. Fort Independence – a five-bastioned, granite fort built in 1834 – dominates the island today, and a tour is a great way to learn about this historic place. The island is also good for cycling, strolling and swimming, so why not make a day of it?
