YOTEL Edinburgh occupies Erskine House on Queen Street, in the heart of the New Town and inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a city-centre hotel in the literal sense:  Princes Street is five minutes on foot, Waverley Station is fifteen, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery is at the far end of the same street.

Among hotels in Edinburgh, it holds one thing no competitor can match. Imaginex is a two-storey 360° screening room, a venue that wraps a film, a product launch or a party in projection on every surface. It sits downstairs from the guest floors, which means an event space of a scale usually found in a cultural venue, in a hotel you can walk out of and be on Princes Street before the coffee cools.

Rooms run from Premium Queen through to the VIP King Suite. Revolve, the bar and lounge on the ground floor, faces the street.

    Imaginex and event spaces

Imaginex is a two-storey 360° screening room. Projection covers the walls, the space is fully customisable, and it has hosted brunches, corporate events, brand experiences and private parties. Nothing else in Edinburgh works this way. Most venues that can do immersive projection are museums or galleries with fixed programming; this one can be booked, dressed and turned over to whatever a client brings to it.

Alongside Imaginex, two interconnecting meeting rooms take groups of six to fifty delegates depending on layout. Both carry smart TVs, AV and lighting, air conditioning, filtered water, conference stationery and complimentary super-fast WiFi. Revolve doubles as a co-working space during the day: long tables, corner seats, charging points, free WiFi. It becomes a bar in the evening, with cocktails, Scottish beers and an all-day menu, open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 1am at the weekend. The gym is open to all guests.

    Things to do nearby

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, part of the National Galleries of Scotland, is at the east end of Queen Street, an eight-minute walk along the street, and free to enter. It is the closest of the national galleries to the hotel and among the best in the city.

St Andrew Square is five minutes away, a green square with a café and, in winter, one of the city's Christmas markets. Princes Street Gardens sit below the Castle rock, seven minutes away, and remain the best place in the city centre to sit down outdoors.

Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline and rewards the twenty-minute climb. The Royal Mile runs from the Castle down through the Old Town to Holyrood, fifteen minutes from the hotel, and takes in St Giles' Cathedral, the closes and the Scottish Parliament at the bottom. The National Museum of Scotland covers everything from dinosaurs to Dolly the sheep, and is free.

The New Town itself is the context for all of it. Georgian, planned, symmetrical, and, in the case of Queen Street, still lived in rather than preserved.
