FOUR REASONS YOU SHOULD VISIT NEW YORK IN THE SPRING
With the coldest days of winter firmly behind us, it’s time to start thinking about how we can make the most of the warmer spring weather. This is a great time to visit the city, so read on for YOTEL’s 4 reasons why you should visit New York in Spring!
1. ENJOY THE NEW YORK OUTDOORS
Ok – maybe when you think about New York, fresh air and spending time outside aren’t the very first things that come to mind, but there are plenty of ways to make the most of the sunny weather.
Head out to Central Park. Taking a hike or a bike ride around the park is an excellent way to get outdoors, and there’s plenty to see. Visit the Alice in Wonderland statue, discover the flowers at the Conservatory Garden, or just people watch. All different types of New Yorkers make an appearance when the weather gets better.
The High Line is another fantastic place to get some fresh air, and it tends to be a lot quieter than Central Park. If you’re looking for a peaceful spot to catch some rays and see the city, this is the place to be.
Hudson Boat trips are a perfect option for those who want to take in the city from a new angle. There’s so much to see from out on the river, and your guides are sure to show even the most seasoned visitor something they hadn’t seen before.
Spring sees the return of the Floating Park. This incredible structure is built on an 80ft barge and uses filtered water from the New York Harbour. This year, the park will take the form of a floating orchard, where you’ll be able to see the beauty of nature and sustainability as the apples flower.
For those who are willing to travel a little further, there are many amazing places to make the most of the wonderful weather. Head out to the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens for some outdoor art. Or take the sky tram to Roosevelt Island for a whole new view of New York.
2. TASTE FRESH PRODUCE
Spring brings with it all kinds of flavours in the form of delicious fresh ingredients. With so many awesome farms in upstate New York and New Jersey, you can choose from fresh herbs, new potatoes, lettuces, and even mushrooms in spring. Getting your fill of fresh seasonal produce couldn’t be easier.
Head to Chelsea Market to pick up some top quality fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables. Alongside the healthy stuff, you can also treat yourself with the tasty seasonal cheeses or honey available.
For those who prefer to have their food cooked for them, there are many excellent organic restaurants like Bareburger that specialise in excellent quality, seasonal and local foods. You can even grab a fresh seasonal sandwich at The Green Table while you’re at Chelsea Market.
You don’t even have to leave Hell’s Kitchen to get a taste of the season. Blossom du Jour, a truly local chain, has some delicious offerings just round the corner. With a completely vegan menu, you’ll have no choice but to taste some of the fruits and vegetables on offer.
3. ENJOY SPRING FLOWERS
Although as Miranda Priestly rightly points out in The Devil Wears Prada, florals for spring aren’t groundbreaking, but they are really pretty. Getting out and about amongst the blossoms is an incredible experience.
Flower festivals happen all around the city at this time of year, and many of them are right on YOTEL’s doorstep. Macy’s Flower Show is one of the biggest and brightest, featuring blooms from all over the world. This is also one of the oldest festivals, having started in 1975.
The Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Gardens is a chance to see some more exotic flowers. The orchid family is one of the two biggest in the world, and the range of colours, sizes and shapes won’t disappoint.
The Cherry Blossom Festival focuses on only one flower, but that doesn’t mean there’s less to do and see. Held annually at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, this is an excellent chance to see the beautiful flowers and find out more about Japanese culture as well.
4. CATCH SOME ART
Spring is the perfect time to get your creative juices flowing. (We think it’s probably something to do with the light.) There’s plenty to spark the imagination in New York, but if you need some more inspiration, then seeing some art is the best way we know how.
The art scene in New York is always changing so there’s always something fresh to see. And there are some great smaller galleries in Hell’s Kitchen. Pick up a sketch book and head out to the Sean Kelly Gallery, the Jadite Galleries, and more.
Frieze New York is a great time to discover new artists and galleries you’ve never even heard of before. The annual event brings together some of the best artists and most talked about restaurants, as well as engaging talks by some of the art world’s biggest names.
